The Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library is a branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia located at 5800 Cobbs Creek Parkway in West Philadelphia. Serving the Cobbs Creek community since 1925, the library was renamed in 1990 to honor local activist Blanche Nixon. It offers free access to books, computers, Wi-Fi, meeting spaces, and a wide range of community programs for all ages.
The mission of the Free Library of Philadelphia is to advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity.
The Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library has served its community for nearly a century. Originally funded by an Andrew Carnegie grant and opened in 1925, the branch was renovated in 1957 and again in 1997 as part of the "Changing Lives" campaign. The library was renamed in 1990 to honor Blanche Nixon, a dedicated community activist and volunteer who championed beautification projects including the library's garden and exterior mural.
The library offers diverse programming including storytimes and playgroups for babies and toddlers, preschool and family story times, teen spaces with homework help and games, arts and crafts sessions, chess club, board game nights, genealogy workshops, science activities, and social services support. Summer programs include movie matinees, STEM activities, and community events celebrating local heritage.
The library hosts regular weekly and monthly events including Juneteenth celebrations, family storytimes, teen hangouts, arts and crafts sessions, chess club, board game nights, and community workshops. Special events feature live performances, genealogy research programs, science activities, and cultural celebrations throughout the year.
