Located in northeast Philadelphia, the organization hosts the annual Labor Day weekend Volksfest festival, private events, and year-round community activities including concerts, sports leagues, and biergarten gatherings.
To celebrate the customs and traditions of their German homeland, particularly the annual harvest festival tradition, while using organizational income for charitable purposes supporting German language schools, hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, and individuals in need.
With over 150 years of history, the Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein traces its roots to Bad Cannstatt in Southwestern Germany (Schwabenland/Baden-Württemberg). Founded by German immigrants including notable entrepreneurs Godfrey Keebler and Christian Schmidt, the club has maintained its charitable tradition since 1874 and continues to support German-American cultural events. The organization purchased its current 10-acre property at the corner of Frankford Avenue and Academy Road in northeast Philadelphia in 1947.
The organization operates a biergarten, hosts the annual Volksfest festival on Labor Day weekend (accommodating 30–600 guests), offers private event spaces for weddings, showers, birthdays, and memorials, and provides off-site catering. Regular programming includes weekly dance parties, sports leagues (cornhole, bocce, volleyball), Thursday bingo, summer concert series, and seasonal watch parties.
The Cannstatter hosts recurring weekly events including Tuesday dance parties and sports leagues, Thursday bingo, and regular biergarten entertainment. Seasonal highlights include the Pennypack Summer Concert Series, World Cup watch parties, Father's Day seafood and BBQ fest, and the flagship annual Volksfest held over Labor Day weekend.
