Hopeworks is a social enterprise based in Camden, New Jersey, that transforms the lives of young adults (ages 17–26) through technical training, trauma-informed care, and real-world work experience. Founded in 1999 by Father Jeff Puthoff and members of three North Camden churches, Hopeworks has grown from a single row home into a comprehensive youth development nonprofit with locations in Camden and Philadelphia. The organization provides education, technical training, and entrepreneurship opportunities in a positive, healing atmosphere designed to break cycles of violence and poverty. A pivotal shift in 2012 introduced trauma-informed care, which quintupled completion rates and increased retention 12-fold. Hopeworks operates three in-house businesses—Web Development, GIS, and Revenue Cycle Management—that provide paid work experience while serving real clients.
Hopeworks is led by CEO Dan Rhoton and COO Onome Pela-Emore, supported by a leadership team including Senior Directors overseeing Career Programming, Workforce Solutions, Development, Business, and Administration. The organization employs specialists across web development, GIS, training, career readiness coaching, and community partnerships. The Board of Directors includes leaders from major corporations like Comcast, American Water, and PNC Bank, as well as entrepreneurs and nonprofit executives committed to workforce development and social impact.
Hopeworks offers comprehensive youth training programs including technical certification in web development, GIS, and Revenue Cycle Management; paid internships and apprenticeships; permanent job placement support; and post-secondary scholarships for college or advanced training. The organization provides wrap-around support through career coaching, academic assistance, and the CRIB residential program for stable housing and life skills. Alumni receive ongoing support through The Cohen Technology Center, a coworking space offering internet access and professional resources. The organization is expanding into AI upskilling to prepare young adults for emerging opportunities in the artificial intelligence economy.
Hopeworks hosts annual signature events including the HOPE Summit (bringing together young professionals, industry leaders, and educators), the Annual Pitch Competition showcasing trainee entrepreneurship, and Listen and Learn Network Events where professionals share career experiences with young adults. The organization also hosts specialized events like the Healthcare Leadership Exchange and AI-Ready sessions exploring workforce transformation.
