City Year is a national service program that deploys AmeriCorps members, ages 17-25, into schools across 29 cities to serve as student success coaches and help K-12 students develop academic, workforce, and interpersonal skills. Founded in 1988, City Year combines direct student support with leadership development for young adults, creating positive learning environments where students can thrive and graduate college and career ready.
City Year believes that all students can succeed and that developing the skills and talents of young people contributes to strong, vibrant communities. The organization supports students and schools by deploying AmeriCorps members who serve in schools all day, every day, while also developing civic leaders prepared to advance educational outcomes in their communities.
City Year addresses the challenge that many K-12 students lack adequate support, relationships, and resources to engage deeply with learning and stay on track academically. The organization operates in 250 schools across 29 US cities and 21 states, as well as in South Africa and the UK. City Year's unique approach combines direct student support with workforce skill development for AmeriCorps members, who gain access to exclusive scholarships and develop critical interpersonal and civic leadership skills through their year of service.
City Year's leadership includes a Management Executive Committee, Executive Directors, and a national Board of Trustees committed to advancing educational outcomes. The organization also features a robust alumni network of more than 40,000 former corps members who have taken their service experience into their communities and careers. Staff, AmeriCorps members, alumni, and board members work together to support and develop AmeriCorps members as leaders in their schools and communities.
