New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) is a community-driven, trauma-informed, and equity-focused nonprofit serving the Kensington, Port Richmond, and Fishtown neighborhoods of Philadelphia. For 40 years, NKCDC has provided real estate development, housing counseling, small business assistance, workforce development, nutrition education, and community health resources to residents and businesses across the region.
NKCDC advances social equity and economic empowerment by nurturing and creating opportunities for neighbors to live in, and actively shape, their neighborhoods of choice.
NKCDC uses a strategic combination of real estate development, community engagement, and direct services to ensure all neighbors can remain and prosper where they choose to live. The organization focuses on four key areas: generating wealth through homeownership and small business support; fighting displacement through affordable housing and financial assistance; building community capacity through civic engagement; and improving health through nutrition education, community health workers, and open space management.
NKCDC is led by Executive Director Dr. Bill McKinney, a longtime Kensington resident with over 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience. The organization employs more than 30 full-time and 15 part-time staff members organized into departments including Real Estate Development, Housing Services, Economic Development, Food Systems, Workforce Development, Community Health, and Civic Engagement. The Board of Directors comprises 15 members, all of whom live within NKCDC's service boundaries.
NKCDC operates comprehensive programs including housing stability assistance and homebuyer counseling; small business resources and commercial corridor management; nutrition education and urban agriculture through the Nourish program; community health worker training and deployment; Cure Violence outreach and intervention; and workforce development initiatives. The organization also manages open spaces, provides business tax preparation, and offers artist resources.
NKCDC hosts regular community events and workshops covering topics such as estate planning, financial literacy, record expungement, homeownership, small business accounting, and diabetes prevention. The organization partners with community organizations to offer free legal, financial, and health services to residents, with events listed on their community calendar.
